How to dial numbers from Mexico from now on?
A few months ago, the Federal Institute of Telecommunications made a surprising announcement: as of August 2019, dialing to telephone numbers would change forever, with the aim of being easier. The date has arrived, so below we will explain in detail the new way of marking.
Basically, what happened is that the IFT eliminated the prefixes 01, 044 and 045. From this moment on, all numbers in the interior of the country will consist of 10 digits, regardless of whether they are landlines or cell phones. The only thing you have to remember is the LADA code of each state plus the digits of the line.

In Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, the LADA codes are 2-digit (55, 33 and 81), while the lines have 8. Adding these numbers, a 10-digit dialing is created. In the rest of the country, the LADA codes are 3 digits, while the lines have 7. Again, the sum generates a 10-digit number.
The IFT announced that this change was made due to the growing need for more lines as more telephone lines are contracted, so “the dialing procedures will be simplified and standardized throughout the country.” With the modification, “greater availability of numbering can be guaranteed.”
So, now how does it have to be marked? Very easy:
- If you are going to dial a landline phone: forget the 01, just dial the LADA of the state plus the 8 digits of the line
- If you are going to dial a cell phone in your city: forget 044, just dial the LADA of the state plus the 8 or 7 digits of the line
- If you are going to dial a cell phone in another city: forget 045, just dial the LADA of the state plus the 8 or 7 digits of the line
These new rules apply to dialing from landlines. If you had already made dials from your cell phone, surely you had realized that most of them were already 10 digits.
Lastly, regarding the numbers 01 800 and 01 900, the prefix 01 will be eliminated. Other than that, they will continue to work the same.
And the long distance?
This change to a 10-digit dialing does not only affect the interior of the country. From now on, if you dial from a foreign country to Mexico, everything has also been simplified. In this case, you can forget the digit 1 that was put after the country code. Here, you will make a 12-digit dial: the country code (+52) plus the 10 simplified digits that we have already told you about before.
